Introducing the newest book from Wonderful Me - What Should I Do?
What Should I Do? helps children understand the difference between accidents and purposeful harm and encourages them not to carry their worries around with them all day. Through the use of child-drawn images and clever-rhyming, What Should I Do? lets children know,Β in a way that is age appropriate and easy for them to understand, that accidents happen "to humans big and small" and what to say to "someone you trust" when they are not quite sure what they should do.Β
Why children need this book?
Whether you are a teacher, parent, carer or a professional working with children, this book provides two things:
- Understanding for all children about the differences between accidents and purposeful harm - the doorway to conversation is opened by reading the book and the flow of the conversation should be adult-led depending on the child's age and level of understanding. These conversations could be just what a child needs to encourage them to communicate their worries to their trusted adult.
- Opportunity for children who are already carrying around shame that is not theirs to carry to speak-up and communicate to someone safe.Β
A message from the author:
I hope that you feel heard, and that growing up you had someone who you could turn to when you needed advice, was feeling unsure, or just needed to vent. Sadly, we know there are so many people who donβ t have a go-to person, or never even knew that it was an option. What Should I Do? encourages children not to carry those heavy feelings around with them.
Over the years, we have had many conversations with people who have carried shame and guilt around with them for years and years β which was never theirs to carry.
This is heartbreaking and it is not okay!Β
Our hope is this book provides the platform that you need to help your children understand this concept, and to also let them know itβs okay to talk if they are ever unsure about something.
Our kids need to be equipped from the get-go and educated around the areas of shame and guilt. These are areas that arenβt often addressed with young children, but they need not be discussed in a dark light. What Should I Do? was created with a heart of helping kids to understand - from a young age - that they have a voice, accidents happen, and they are not responsible for other peopleβs behaviour.
