The Hug was written with the sole purpose of speaking directly to the child listening to the story, to encourage them to know and love who they are.
The author, Kirilee Furlong, did some digging into the power of hugs and the positive impact that hugs can have on us (a good 20-second hug can lower stress levels, increase endorphins and wash away feelings of fear!)
In her digging, Kirilee also found out that just thinking about a hug can have the same benefits. With this is mind, she set out to write a book that allowed children to tap into the power of hugs. So even when you child can't be with you, encourage them to close their eyes, give their Big Hug toy a cuddle and imagine they are hugging their grown up - sounds simple, however, as we know, it's the simple things that often work the best.
This practice gives children a tool to self-comfort and bring themselves back to a place of calm. Hug Emotion Magnets and FREE Emotions Mat
The Emotion Magnets are a great resource to follow on with after reading Have You Ever? and having the initial "welcome to emotions" conversations.
We love the Emotion Magnets, especially when they are introduced to children in a fun, hands-on way (see image below of our rainbow rice activity). Taking the time to talk about each of the magnets and the emotion they portray with your child gives them the opportunity to learn about different emotions and what they are called. It also allows for two way conversation with you, their trusted adult, and themself.
This is important because it tells your child they are in safe place where their emotions and feelings matter AND it also let's them know that it is ok to feel the way they do.
One big message we try to communicate is, it's ok to be angry, sad, frustrated etc, but how we treat other people when we have these big feelings is something we need to be aware of e.g just because we are mad doesn't mean we can yell or push or name call.

Kids love this little Hug and although he was made to go on the school bag, children also love popping him in their pocket or even bringing him along to big moments where they might feel a little nervous or scared, like the dentist, school camp, or other big events for them - he is small enough that they can hold him in their hand.
